Take Your Hands Off!

Take Your Hands Off!

Matt McCall, Design Team

A legal war for uteral control has begun and both sides have fought valiantly for what they believe to be just. Women everywhere are fiercely protesting any legal constraints on their bodies, whether that be fighting for government funded birth control or the right to have an abortion, while GOP affiliates and supporters have moral objections on the grounds of faith. The outstanding problem with this issue is, predictably, that both sides have and continue to refuse to budge or accept even reasonable compromise on just about anything, for reasons of stubbornness and strongly held beliefs. For everyone on the outside of the struggle, entering the debate is intimidating because making your voice heard is sure to offend somebody and bring hostility your way. The only way to diffuse this ticking bomb of an issue is for our lawmakers and legislators to take a hands off approach. A woman’s choice to use birth control or do just about anything concerning her body does not affect anyone but herself, and when put that way it seems like a non-issue for a free country. It gets fuzzy when the government is instead advocating tax-paid abortions and birth control. A taxpayer’s dollar should never go to a cause they morally object to. That is exactly the same as mandating what a woman can do with her body, an infringement on a United States citizen’s personal freedoms; protecting that is the only commitment a democratic nation owes its people. I urge the government officials in this country to do just that and protect all of our freedoms, allowing everyone the ability to do what they want without intruding on the rights of others. Ultimately, they just need to take their hands off.
